You can protect your business from Employment Tribunal claims by including our legal expenses insurance policy as part of your Lawrite HR service package.

The policy is included as part of Lawrite Employment Law Plus and the Lawrite Managed HR service.

You will be covered for legal defence costs, and the cover also includes certain compensatory awards.

You can get up to £100,000 cover per claim (maximum five claims a year).

Tribunal representation will be arranged if required.

The last decade or so has seen massive increases in both employee rights and awareness by staff of those rights, illustrated by the number of claims made at Employment Tribunals.

Last year (2006-07) there were 132,577 ET1 claims accepted by Employment Tribunals (Source: Tribunals Service). This is an increase of 15 per cent compared with 115,039 cases in 2005-06. There were 86,181 in 2004-05.

Many cases cover more than one jurisdiction, or complaint, and the 2006-07 cases contained a total of 238,546 complaints, including 44,491 for unfair dismissal, 44,013 for equal pay, 28,153 for sexual discrimination, 3,780 for race discrimination, 5,533 for disability discrimination and 972 for age discrimination.

Maximum compensation awards in unfair dismissal cases can be nearly £70,000, with no limit at all in discrimination cases.
